Update Regarding Fire at 1727 Fillmore Street
On May 10th, a 2-alarm fire displaced all 62 residents in a 51-unit senior residence at 1727 Fillmore Street. The fire was contained, but there was extensive water damage throughout the building, utilities were shut off, and residents are unable to return to their homes for at least two weeks until repairs are made. Any building fire is extremely traumatic for residents, but even more so for residents of a senior living facility.
Fortunately, no residents were seriously injured by the fire. Several experienced smoke inhalation, and one was transported to the hospital and later released. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Some of the residents have temporarily relocated to live with family or friends until they can move back in; about half of the residents are being put up temporarily at two nearby hotels.
Our office has been in regular communication with the City departments coordinating the emergency response. We are grateful to the San Francisco Fire Department, Department of Emergency Management, Human Services Agency, and Department of Building Inspection, as well as the American Red Cross, for their prompt response to the fire and support for the residents. The property management for Jones Memorial Homes has done an exemplary job in assisting residents.
Short term, HSA reports that the agency is connecting displaced seniors with healthcare, social services and food programs as they await return. American Red Cross provided volunteers and emergency aid at the scene and in the immediate aftermath. In the event that displacement is prolonged, HSA will work to identify housing options and available city programs to assist displaced tenants. SF Department of Building Inspection will work with the property management team to determine the safety and habitability of the 1727 Fillmore apartments for the eventual return of residents. It is our hope that most residents will be able to move back in soon, and suitable housing can be identified for those who may experience prolonged displacement. This has been a very stressful time for the seniors and their families.
