Statement Regarding Mayor’s Tenderloin Ordinance

After extensive conversations with stakeholders, I’m pleased to report that we have negotiated an agreement regarding the Mayor’s legislation to shut down retail establishments in the Tenderloin at midnight. Our amendments will allow corner stores (already strictly regulated by ABC) to continue to stay open until 2am. The amendments will also add provisions to require outreach to businesses in language, enhanced neighborhood services, a 6-month report on the impact of the pilot, enforcement against any businesses engaged in conduct that’s already illegal (including illegal onsite gambling or violations of health and safety laws), as well as modifying the Ordinance’s enforcement provisions to protect businesses from frivolous lawsuits.

We believe that these changes will allow the City to pilot this approach and work to address conditions in the Tenderloin while also protecting valued small businesses that are not doing anything wrong. We want to thank all stakeholders for their collaboration and good faith efforts to come together around these improvements to the Ordinance.
