Statement on Human Rights Commission

I’m deeply concerned about the recent revelations regarding the Human Rights Commission (HRC) and its former Executive Director, Dr. Sheryl Davis. The Controller's Office and the City Attorney have launched an inquiry. It is essential to determine the facts, take appropriate corrective action, protect whistleblowers, and restore the public trust.

As we work to ensure transparency and accountability in the operations of this Department, we must also take care to make sure that the essential work to protect vulnerable San Franciscans is not interrupted. HRC leads some of our city’s most important work, including investigating and mediating housing discrimination complaints, disbursing funds for the Dream Keeper Initiative, and advocating for racial equity. Those most vulnerable should not have to pay the price for the abuses of power in this Administration.

I support the Dream Keeper Initiative, which was meant to uplift our City’s Black community and continues to be essential for the well-being of many of our residents and neighborhoods, including in District 5. San Francisco’s Black community deserves our continued support as we determine what happened and push for accountability.
