Update on Fillmore Safeway

Today we learned that Safeway will not close in January as previously announced, but will instead close on or about February 7, 2025.

Safeway was initially reported to close in March of 2024. We quickly rallied with the community, the NAACP, and many others to demand that they push back the deadline. We introduced a resolution at the Board of Supervisors that unanimously passed, and Safeway announced they would extend the deadline until January of 2025.

I continue to believe that the best path forward to guarantee a future grocery store and affordable housing on this former redevelopment site is for the City to commence negotiations to acquire the site. On November 20th, I sent a Letter of Inquiry to the Mayor’s administration calling on the Mayor to commence negotiations and explore all legal options, up to and including eminent domain, to acquire the site and ensure that the site continues to serve the community with a full service grocery store and the development of housing that is affordable to those in the neighborhood and those who have been displaced from the neighborhood.

I look forward to continuing to support the community in this struggle.
