Fake News Site Founded By Disgraced Silicon Valley Tech Founder Falsely Reports Supervisor Dean Preston's Resignation
Fake news site “BNN News” on Saturday falsely reportedthat District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston had resigned “[a]mid [c]ontroversy [s]tirred by Elon Musk.” BNN News was founded by disgraced serial tech founder Gurbaksh Chahal, who was once called “ Silicon Valley’s Most Self-Destructive Founder.” The story was then reposted on MSN , where the fabricated story remained for over 24 hours despite requests from Preston’s office that the baseless story be removed and retracted.
Instead of a retraction, BNN News appears to have revised the article to be about Preston’s departure from the site “X,” but neither BNN nor MSN include any acknowledgment of the fabricated and incorrect “resignation” article. The revised article also includes new quotes and statements falsely attributed to Preston, including fake quotes about Musk and false assertions that Preston called for a boycott of “X”. The original URL to the fabricated “resignation” story, which includes the prior headline that Preston resigned amid controversy, still works but leads to the newly revised story.
“I quit Twitter after Elon Musk called for my imprisonment,” stated Preston, “But I intend to finish my term serving the people of District 5.”
Chahal, the founder of the fake news site, and BNN News are no strangers to controversy. Last year, BNN News and approximately 80 of its associated accounts were banned from Twitter under the platform’s rules regarding spam content. Chahal was previously charged and convicted of battery by former District Attorney George Gascón after a video emerged of him kicking his then-partner over 100 times. He was placed on probation but subsequently jailed after he allegedly assaulted a different woman before his probation term ended.
Fake news, images, and videos have been on the rise since 2016, with various sites posting false Presidential election-related news. With elections over a year away, the publishing and dissemination of fabricated stories is especially concerning.
“People deserve reliable news sources,” stated Preston. “I sincerely hope that this is not a preview of what’s to come and that we never normalize this kind of disinformation.”
