Board Approves Acquisition of Gotham Hotel for Permanent Supportive Housing in District Five
SAN FRANCISCO — The Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to acquire the property at 835 Turk Street, known as the Gotham Hotel, to convert to permanent supporting housing (PSH). District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston last year called for the site to be acquired for supportive housing, and worked closely with the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing to finalize the acquisition.
“This type of acquisition is absolutely essential and we are thrilled to see it come to fruition,” said Preston. “With 114 large units all with private bathrooms, 835 Turk is an excellent building for permanent supportive housing that will help people move from homelessness to housing with the services they need.”
Supportive housing is a proven model to provide stable housing for the unhoused. With housing and support services, vulnerable San Franciscans can tend to their physical and mental health in a stable and permanent environment, which benefits the whole community.
The acquisition is the latest in Supervisor Preston’s efforts to address the homelssness crisis in District 5 since taking office. These efforts include: launching the first SIP hotel to shelter homeless women and families at the Oasis Hotel where they remain to this day; partnering with the SFDEM Emergency Operations Center to launch the city’s most successful safe sleep site at 730 Stanyan Street; and championing forward-looking programs like the tenant right to counsel to prevent displacement and homelessness. Supervisor Preston was also an early backer and led District 5 outreach for the groundbreaking Prop. C which has generated hundreds of millions of dollars to address homelessness, and is the source of funds for the 835 Turk acquisition.
The District 5 office, in collaboration with the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, implemented a robust community outreach plan.
“My office was pleased to partner with the Mayor’s Office, the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, and community members on this acquisition, and we hope this marks a new era of expanding permanent supportive housing opportunities in District 5," Preston said.
